Pennsylvania Avenue
by DCDave

A court does not a monarch make
Nor barricades a king,
But those who treasure freedom take
Them as most threatening.

With Andrew Jackson looking on,
I'm sure reproachfully,
The party that he made has gone
Into our history.

(With apologies to Richard Lovelace)

p.s. A statue of Gen. Andrew Jackson
on horseback is the focal attraction of
Lafayette Park which faces the White
House on the closed-off Pennsylvania
Avenue side.
